Portage Experience Walkthrough

Game Purpose

Take a journey through the Boreal Forest by foot and by canoe. Encountering experiences and observable interactions the more the player spends time in the environment. To encourage a state of mindfulness and awareness of the beauty within nature. Finding out that interesting things can be seen if you just stop and pay attention to your surroundings.

The Journey

As a voyager set in the present day, our character is on a journey to deliver a package which is the end game. The catch might be that this interaction of delivering the package isn't even seen. The package won't ever be made evident of obvious that it is an object of importance to the character. So, allowing the player to focus on the journey itself. Something often mentioned in Buddist teachings for mindfulness. The journey should include many opportunities for the player to stop and watch, wait and/or listen. But making these interactions non-obvious that the game wants them to interact with them.

The Interactions

With the constrictions of the Boreal Forest's wilderness, the interactions must birth from nature or at least be believable for that environment. Animals, other travellers, the environment itself, actions the character can do or even the weather are foundations from where many possible interactions can occur for the players. These must afford to the player that a slower pace is key to greater enjoyment. It is here that the experience won't appeal to everyone or even a greater audience. Some interactions may be instantaneous, some might work as reoccurring instances which record a level of involvement with the game. The more the player 'finds' the more they may end up seeing.

The Sounds

Creating an atmosphere for the player to feel relaxed within is of great importance to improve the pace and aesthetic of the experience. Designing the most natural and calming space possible that will hopefully allow players to immerse themselves into the forest environment and lose themselves on this journey.
